Ethnoburb: A New Model for Understanding Ethnic and Racial Settlement Patterns In her groundbreaking book, "Ethnoburb: A New Model for Understanding Ethnic and Racial Settlement Patterns Wei Li challenges traditional models of ethnic and immigrant settlements and offers a fresh perspective on the evolution of multiracial, multicultural, and multinational communities in the United States and Canada. Through a comprehensive analysis of the Chinese American community in Los Angeles' San Gabriel Valley, Li presents a new approach to understanding the spatial transformation of these communities and the opportunities and challenges that come with it. The Traditional Ghetto or Enclave Model Traditionally, ethnic and immigrant settlements have been understood through the lens of either ghettos or enclaves, where one ethnic group dominates and excludes others. However, Li argues that this model is insufficient for understanding the complex dynamics of contemporary ethnic and racial conurbations. Instead, she proposes the concept of the ethnoburb, which acknowledges the diversity and complexity of these communities. The ethnoburb is characterized by a concentration of one ethnic minority group, but without the dominant majority that defines a traditional Chinatown.
