Big Data in Materials Research and Development Summary of a Workshop Introduction: The world we live in today is vastly different from the one our grandparents knew. With the advent of technology, everything has changed, from how we communicate to how we work and even how we think. One area that has seen tremendous growth and evolution is the field of materials research and development. The need to study and understand the process of technology evolution is crucial to the survival of humanity and the unification of people in a warring state. Big Data in Materials Research and Development is the summary of a workshop convened by the National Research Council Standing Committee on Defense Materials Manufacturing and Infrastructure in February 2014. The workshop aimed to discuss the impact of big data on materials and manufacturing, and how the materials science community can benefit from appropriate access to data and metadata for materials development, processing, application development, and application life cycles.
