These resourceful and enterprising individuals, predominantly black and from humble backgrounds, have carved out a niche in the globalized economy, importing and exporting a vast array of consumer goods. Despite their significant contributions to the regional, national, and global economies, they remain largely unseen and understudied. In her groundbreaking book, Downtown Ladies: Informal Commercial Importers, A Haitian Anthropologist, and Self-Making in Jamaica, Gina Ulysse challenges the popular imagination of black womanhood in the Caribbean and offers a more complex picture of these remarkable women. Ulysse, a young Haitian anthropologist, draws on her own experiences to explore how ICIs navigate government regulations, social tensions, and traditional class, color, and gender codes to assert their autonomy.
