Against the Tide: Immigrants, Day Laborers, and Community in Jupiter, Florida In the midst of heated debates and restrictive legislation surrounding immigration across the United States, one small coastal town in Florida has taken a different path. Against the Tide tells the story of Jupiter, a town of approximately 50000 residents, where immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala have been flocking in search of work. The influx of migrants has created tensions and concerns about health and human safety, but surprisingly, the community has come together to address these issues and find a solution. This book provides an insider's view into how the town's residents, university faculty and students, and town representatives joined forces to mediate community tensions and move the informal labor market to the new El Sol Neighborhood Resource Center. The central argument of Against the Tide is that centers like El Sol can address many of the fundamental fears that polarize and stymie both local policy debates and the larger issue of immigration reform.
