Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory The book "Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory" tells the story of the individuals who were sent to Molokai's remote Kalaupapa peninsula between 186 and 1969, estimated to be around 800, mostly Native Hawaiians, due to their suspected leprosy diagnosis. Despite being forced to leave their homes and citizenship behind, these individuals left a powerful testimony of their lives through letters, petitions, memoirs, and oral history interviews. The book challenges the assumption that those sent to Kalaupapa were unconcerned with the world they left behind and instead shows that they remained actively interested and involved in life beyond the peninsula. The book is based on over 200 hours of interviews with archival documents, including more than 300 letters and petitions written by the earliest residents, translated from Hawaiian.
