The Lost Women of Mill Street: A Novel As the Civil War raged on in 1864, Sherman's army was marching towards Atlanta, leaving destruction and devastation in its wake. In the midst of this chaos, a cotton mill in Mill Street, commandeered by the Confederacy, lay in its path. Inside the mill, Clara Douglas, a young woman, weaved cloth and waited for the return of her fiancé, who had gone west to fight for the Confederacy. However, when Sherman's troops destroyed the mill, Clara's plans for a new life in Nebraska were threatened, and she found herself branded as a traitor by the Federals. Clara, along with her sister Kitty and countless others, were exiled to a desolate refugee prison hundreds of miles from home.
