A Regional Economic History of Thailand Modern Economic History of Southeast Asia Book 8 In this book, we explore the economic history of Thailand's central, northern, southern, and northeastern regions from the signing of the Bowring Treaty in 1850 to the present day. We examine the long-term changes in each region and the various forces that drove these transformations, providing a comprehensive understanding of Thailand's modern economic history. The Central Region: A Hub of Commerce and Trade Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, has long been considered the hub of commerce and trade in the country. However, the central region's economic development was not solely driven by the capital city. The ancient city of Ayutthaya, located in the central region, played a significant role in shaping the country's economy before the rise of Bangkok. The central region's fertile plains and abundant waterways made it an ideal location for rice cultivation and trading, which contributed to its economic growth. The region's strategic location also facilitated the exchange of goods with neighboring countries, such as China and India.
