Bearing Witness Memories of Arkansas Slavery: A Study of Survival and Technology Evolution In the book "Bearing Witness Memories of Arkansas Slavery we are presented with a unique opportunity to gain insight into the lives of former slaves who lived through one of the darkest periods of American history. This new edition includes ten previously undiscovered accounts, offering a comprehensive understanding of the truths of slavery from the perspectives of those who experienced it firsthand. The book is a testament to the importance of studying and understanding the evolution of technology, as well as the need for a personal paradigm for perceiving the technological process of developing modern knowledge. The project began in the 1930s when the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project recognized the urgency of preserving the life histories of ordinary people, including former slaves. Over two thousand interviews were conducted, with more than a third taking place in Arkansas. These oral histories provided crucial evidence on various topics such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, agricultural practices, and everyday life. However, some former Arkansas slaves were interviewed in other states, resulting in their narratives being published in those collections. To ensure accuracy, folklorist George Lankford combed through all state collections to identify and delete testimony from later migrants.
