The American Civil War was a brutal conflict that lasted from 1861 to 1865, fought between the Union (the northern states) and the Confederacy (the southern states) over issues including slavery, states' rights, and economic and cultural differences. The war had a profound impact on the United States and its people, leading to the deaths of an estimated 620,000 to 750,000 soldiers and civilians and the emancipation of four million enslaved African Americans. The war began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces fired on Union troops at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Over the next four years, the two sides fought battles large and small across the country, with the Union ultimately emerging victorious. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in Confederate territory.
