The Visual is Political: Feminist Photography and Countercultural Activity in 1970s Britain In the tumultuous decade of the 1970s, Britain was marked by political, economic, and social upheaval. The collapse of the welfare state, massive unemployment, race riots, and workers' strikes created an environment of instability and discontent. However, this period also saw the emergence and solidification of various forms of social activism, including the Women's Movement. As part of their struggle for equality and justice, members of the movement increasingly turned to photography as a tool for their political activism. In her book, The Visual is Political, KlormanEraqi examines the application of feminist theory, photojournalism, advertising, photo montage, punk subculture, and aesthetics in the works of these photographers, highlighting the statement and challenge that their photographic language posed.
