Railways in South Wales and the Central Wales Line in the Late 20th Century: A Journey Through Time and Technology Evolution In the early 1980s, I began to visit South Wales on a regular basis to capture the railway scene through my camera lens. At that time, the collieries and steelworks were generating a significant amount of rail traffic, with Class 37 diesels being the usual motive power. Passenger trains were operated by Class 47s and 37s, while 'Peaks' and Class 50s would occasionally appear on the tracks. High-speed trains (HSTs), DMUs (Sprinters and Pacers), and other interesting locomotives were also common sights in the Welsh capital, Cardiff. As time passed, the coal industry declined, and the rail traffic decreased, but there was always something new and exciting to discover. Rugby Internationals at Cardiff regularly brought unique and interesting motive power to the area, including privately owned Class 50s. The Class 37s were gradually replaced by Class 56s and later Class 60s on many duties in South Wales, but the Rhymney Valley still saw Class 37 diesels working passenger trains into the 21st century. On special occasions like Rugby International days, privately owned Class 50s were also used.
