As a child, Leosz experiences firsthand the horrors of the war, facing impossible decisions, incredible resourcefulness, and pure luck. This memoir narrows down the epic history of the Holocaust to the struggle of one boy, giving readers a personal and intimate look at the events that shaped the lives of millions of people. From the age of 7 to 13, Leosz endures all the brutal realities of the Holocaust, living in the Krakow Ghetto. He faces three mass deportations to the death camps, but manages to escape each time with split-second timing and incredible luck. For several weeks, he pretends to be a Polish street child, hiding in plain sight while trying to survive. Eventually, he is caught and sentenced to die, but miraculously reunites with his family in the Plaszow labor camp in Austria.
