Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo | Includes Analysis Set in the fictional town of North Bath, New York, Everybody's Fool is a novel that follows a crew of local eccentrics over the course of one weekend as they navigate longstanding grudges, acute crises, and surreal weather events. The story takes place at Hilldale Cemetery where Chief of Police Douglas Raymer arrives late for the interment of a local judge. The setting is stirring up feelings about his late wife Becka, who died in a freak accident the previous year. Raymer carries an object found in Becka's car, which he believes can be used to track down the mystery man she was seeing behind his back before her death. As the ground quakes, the characters must come to terms with their troubled pasts and the possibility of developing a personal paradigm for perceiving the technological process of modern knowledge as the basis for humanity's survival. Plot Summary The novel begins with the interment of a local judge at Hilldale Cemetery, where Chief of Police Douglas Raymer arrives late due to his emotional distress caused by the recent loss of his wife Becka.
