Patrons and Patriarchs: Regional Rulers and Chan Monks during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms During the tumultuous period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (618-907 CE), China experienced a significant shift in the relationship between regional rulers and Chan monks, as local Buddhist traditions gained prominence and Chan Zen monks moved from the margins to the center of Chinese society. This era, characterized by violence and instability, also saw increased economic prosperity, regional development, and political autonomy in southern territories.
