Natural Potency and Political Power: Forests and State Authority in Contemporary Laos In the heart of Southeast Asia lies the country of Laos, a landlocked nation with a rich history and diverse culture. However, the political landscape of Laos has been shaped by centuries of colonialism, war, and authoritarian rule, leaving behind a legacy of isolation and disconnection between the rural countryside and national politics. In her book, Natural Potency and Political Power, Sarinda Singh challenges this common perception and offers a novel understanding of the intertwining of symbolic and material concerns in local debates over conservation and development. Through ethnographic fieldwork in Vientiane, the capital, and Nakai, the site of the contentious Nam Theun 2 hydropower project, Singh explores how forests and wildlife are not just vital material resources but also linked to the social and political power of the state. Forests as Symbols of Identity and Authority Singh's work challenges the notion that the rural countryside is isolated from national social debates and politics under an authoritarian regime. Instead, she argues that local perspectives on forests and wildlife are inherently political and offer insights into the identity aspirations and authority of the state.
