Book Description: Contemporary Fiction, Celebrity Culture, and the Market for Modernism: Fictions of New Horizons in Contemporary Writing In this groundbreaking work, we delve into the intricate relationship between contemporary fiction, celebrity culture, and the evolution of modernism in the digital age. Through a comprehensive analysis of the works of renowned authors such as Zadie Smith, Ian McEwan, Martin Amis, Kazuo Ishiguro, Salman Rushdie, Eimear McBride, and Anna Burns, we explore how these writers position their work and public personas within the lucrative market for literary fiction. We argue that the corporate conditions of marketing and branding have redefined older models of literary influence and innovation, shaping the imaginative possibilities for fiction and reviving questions of literary autonomy in the wake of postmodern nihilism. However, we also challenge the artificial periodization that still lingers in academic criticism and instead propose a materialist history of modernism's afterlives, examining the impact of globalization, consumer culture, and digital technology on the reception and circulation of experimental writing. This approach allows us to consider the material conditions that structure literary production and the generation of cultural capital, providing a more nuanced understanding of the interplay between art and commerce in contemporary literature.
