The volume presents a comprehensive overview of the development of Inuit studies from its beginnings in the 1850s to the present day. The Plot of Early Inuit Studies Themes and Transitions 1850s-1980s In the mid-19th century, the study of the Inuit people, known then as Eskimology, began to take shape as a distinct field of anthropology. This collection of 15 chronologically arranged papers offers the first ever definitive treatment of the intellectual history of Inuit studies, tracing its development from its beginnings in the 1850s to the present day. As the field has evolved, so too have the themes and transitions that have shaped it. From the outset, the study of the Inuit was driven by a desire to understand their origins, history, and culture. However, this early period was marked by a Eurocentric approach, which viewed the Inuit through the lens of Western cultural norms and values. This led to a narrow focus on the material aspects of Inuit life, such as their technology and subsistence practices, without fully considering the spiritual and social dimensions of their society. As the field progressed, scholars began to challenge these biases and expand their scope to include a more holistic understanding of Inuit culture. The focus shifted towards the study of Inuit language, art, and spirituality, revealing a rich and complex society that had been previously overlooked.
The Plot of Early Inuit Studies Themes and Transitions 1850-1980-е гг.

The Plot of Early Inuit Studies Themes and Transitions 1850s-1980s In der Mitte des 19.

The Plot of Early Inuit Studies Themes and Transitions 1850-1980.
